A rust sweater, a cream knit, and someone’s favorite plaid shirt. Fall family photos give everyone a reason to bring out the clothes they keep reaching for (including the boots that finally get another outing).
For your 2026 session in Bolivar and the 417, I’d start with the outfits, a date that works for your crew, and where you want the photos to end up. A frame in the hallway? Christmas cards? A portrait of the whole family? Those details help us plan the date and the photos you’d like.
Choose your fall family photo date
Look at the dates your family can make and the background you’d like. September may still give you green trees. October can bring more fall color. An indoor session gives you another look in either month.
The Missouri Department of Conservation’s fall color guide tracks how the season changes. Check local updates as your date gets close. The trees have their own timing, so I’d use the local reports alongside the calendar.

Build outfits around pieces you like
Pick one piece you’re excited to wear and build from there. A floral dress can bring in colors for a cream sweater, a blue shirt, or someone’s jeans. Everyone gets their own outfit, with a few colors connecting the group.
Rust, olive, cream, brown, and denim all give you places to start. So do pink and blue if those are the colors you love. I’d choose the mix you want to keep seeing on your wall.
Lay the outfits on a bed with shoes and layers, then take a phone photo. You’ll see the full group at once. A knit beside denim adds texture. If you love a cardigan, try a photo with it and one without it before you decide.
Try sitting and walking in the full outfit
Walk, sit, and lift your arms in the full outfit. If you’ll hold a child, try that too. For an outdoor session, try the shoes on grass or a path like the one we’ll use.
Let the kids wear their outfits before photo day. You’ll have time to swap an itchy sweater or a pair of stiff shoes. Ask them to sit, walk, and raise their arms, too. You’ll see whether the clothes move with them.
Ask about the background if you’re choosing between two outfits. Denim can work against a studio wall or beside fall trees; we can talk through which look you like.
Choose a setting and time that fit your family
For outdoor photos, think about the walk from parking, places to sit, and how much exploring your group will enjoy. Tell us about access needs before we choose the spot.
For a studio session, ask about seating and how your group will fit in the space. Share nap and meal times when you choose a session time. Then tell the kids where you’re going and who they’ll meet.

Make a weather plan before photo day
Ask who will send weather updates and when. Confirm what happens if we need a new time or date. If you’d like an indoor backup, ask whether one is available for your booking.
Rain, wind, heat, and wet ground can all affect an outdoor plan. Check the agreed plan before leaving. If a storm develops, follow National Weather Service lightning safety guidance and move to safe shelter when you hear thunder.
Pack for the people coming with you
Bring water, familiar snacks that fit your child’s needs, any usual care items, and a spare outfit for a little one. Add a layer if the day may cool down. Keep the supplies in a bag you can carry during the session.
