How to Prepare for Senior Pictures

Knowing how to prepare for senior pictures before the day arrives makes the whole session run better. You show up feeling settled, you know what you are bringing, and your outfits are ready. That combination shows in your photos!

Start With Your Outfits First

Outfit selection is fun but also complicated. Give yourself at least two to three weeks to pull looks together because finding something you actually feel good in takes longer than expected.

Two or three outfits gives your gallery range without making the session feel like a wardrobe marathon. ‍Try everything on before the day and make sure it fits the way you want it to. A waistband that is slightly too tight or a neckline that keeps pulling is distracting for you. Move around in each look. If something does not feel right in your bedroom, it will not feel right on location either.

Colors that look good on you in real life tend to translate well on camera. Avoid loud patterns or large logos unless that is part of your personal style — they pull attention away from you. Neutral tones, earth tones, and solid colors generally photograph well and age well in a gallery.

Book the Right Time of Year for What You Want‍ ‍

Outdoor sessions in the 417 have a real sweet spot: late spring, summer, and early fall. Golden hour in the fall gives you that warm Missouri light that photographs particularly well. Summer sessions can work with the right timing — early morning or late evening to avoid the heat and the flat midday light.

If you are planning an outdoor session, booking at least six to eight weeks in advance is worth it. Popular fall dates fill up quickly for High School seniors, and the seniors who wait until September to book are often working with whatever dates are left.

If you have a sport or an activity you want included, think about booking at the end of your season when you are in-shape and have access to your gear. A session built around what you actually do usually produces the most personal gallery.

What to Bring to Your Senior Session

A good packing list keeps the day moving. Beyond your outfits, bring a small bag with these items: touch-up makeup or powder if you wear it, a brush or comb for quick hair fixes, a water bottle, and any props or gear that are part of your look. Senior session snacks are worth thinking about too. If your session runs two to three hours, you will want something to keep your energy up.

Easy portable snacks that do not make a mess are the move — no powdered donuts. For guys, bring a lint roller if you are wearing dark clothing. For everyone, pack a steamer or iron anything beforehand so you are not trying to smooth wrinkles in a parking lot.

Prepare Your Hair and Skin Ahead of Time

If you are getting a haircut before your session, schedule it one to two weeks out — not the day before. A fresh cut looks great in person but can feel slightly off on camera until it settles in. The same goes for color if you are refreshing it.

For skin, give yourself a couple weeks to get into a consistent routine. Staying hydrated and getting enough sleep in the week leading up to your session makes a real difference in how your skin looks. There are no shortcuts there, but the lead time makes it doable.

Day-of, keep makeup closer to your everyday look unless you have a specific vision you have practiced. Overly heavy makeup tends to read differently in photos than it does in the mirror, especially in outdoor light.

Get Into the Right Headspace

Most seniors who feel nervous about their session are nervous about the posing — specifically that they will not know what to do or that they will look awkward. That is the most common concern, and it is worth knowing that most of the posing direction will come from your photographer.

You do not have to walk in with a shot list.

What helps more than anything is coming in with some ideas about what feels like you. Not a rigid plan, just a sense of whether you want something relaxed or something more styled, whether you want your sport or just your looks, whether you want the Bolivar Square or somewhere outside of town. Having that direction makes the session feel like a conversation instead of a guessing game.

Senior pictures are one of the few times in your life where the whole point is just you. The session goes better when you let it be that simple. If you are a Bolivar, MO senior or anywhere in the 417 area and want to book your session, you can find more information and book with us here. ‍
