How to build a senior session wardrobe without buying everything new

Start with an outfit you already like wearing. The jeans you keep reaching for, a dress you’ve been saving for a day out, or the jacket that comes along everywhere.

Those pieces can be part of your senior session wardrobe. Here are a few ways to put looks together from what’s already in your closet.

A senior looks back over her shoulder in a pink velvet top.

Start with an outfit you already love

Pull out one outfit you’d like to try for your photos. Put the whole thing together, shoes included.

It gives you somewhere to start. You can add other options beside it and see what you like together. And if you change your mind about that first outfit, that’s fine, too. It helped get the pile started.

Choose the looks you want to bring

Check how many outfit changes fit your booked session. Then think about the different things you’d enjoy wearing.

You might choose a dress, jeans with a top you love, and something you wear for a sport or hobby. Or you might have several ideas built around the same pair of boots. We can talk through which looks fit the time and places you’ve chosen.

Build on pieces you already have

A senior wears a pink plaid shirt over a collared top.

Lay the pieces out and try a few combinations. Put a jacket over the dress. Try your usual jeans with a different top. See what happens when you change the shoes.

Take a few phone photos as you go. You can compare the outfits later, and you’ll have a record of which top went with which pair of pants. Useful once the whole closet is on the bed.

If you decide to add something, you’ll have a clearer idea of what you’re looking for.

Give your accessories a turn

Gold diamond-shaped drop earrings rest on pink fabric.

A necklace you wear often, a belt, a scarf, or a hat can come into the plan. Try them with the clothes you’ve chosen and see which ones you like.

Set the small pieces beside each outfit as you pack. Earrings have a way of becoming the last thing you’re looking for on the way out.

If you buy something, think about wearing it again

You could choose a top you’d wear to dinner or shoes you’ve wanted for a while. Picture where else you’d enjoy wearing the piece before you decide.

Then try it with the rest of the outfit at home. Sit down, walk around, and check that you like how it feels with the shoes and layers you picked.

Pack an extra option if you’d like one

An extra top, another jacket, or a different pair of shoes can give you a choice on the day. Keep it with the outfit it goes with so we can look at the options together.

Start with what you’re excited to wear. That well-loved jacket has already been to plenty of places with you. It can come along for photos, too.
