Prop inspiration for your senior photos

We want your photos to look like you and celebrate you.

So what’s an easy and fun way for you to do this?

Props.

Props don’t feel forced or overly done because you can incorporate things you already have. Or you know what? Do it completely over the top because you’ve always wanted to and this is the time!

It’s also fun to source props that make your session unique and feel completely you. You can think about those kinds of props like “bring anything but a backpack” day at your school.

The Athlete

You work hard, playing a sport takes a lot of commitment and you should have photos you love that celebrate that.

Prop ideas:

  • jersey, uniform, or gear

  • game ball signed by your team

  • cleats, gloves, or helmet (worn or laid out)

  • letter jacket

  • photo of you from your kindergarten or freshmen year playing your sport

  • team schedule or a program from your biggest game

The Musician

If music is your thing, then it takes a lot of dedication over a long period of time. And we want to photograph that. Instruments have incredible texture and personality in photos, and the way a musician holds their instrument tells an entire story on its own.

Prop ideas:

  • Your instrument: guitar, violin, trumpet, drum sticks, whatever it is

  • Sheet music you’ve performed or written

  • Your band uniform, choir dress, or performance outfit

  • A vinyl record that means something to you

  • Your headphones or earbuds (impartial to a photo of the beat-up ones you use every day

  • A setlist or a program from a performance you’re proud of

  • Your guitar pick collection, rosin, reeds — the small stuff that’s actually big stuff

If you play it, bring it.

The Creative

Painters, sketchers, writers, photographers, builders, sewers, potters — if you make things, let’s show that.

Prop ideas:

  • Your sketchbook, journal, or notebook (worn-in is better than brand new)

  • Art supplies — paintbrushes, colored pencils, a palette

  • A  piece of your own work — a painting, a quilt, a woodworking project

  • Your camera if you’re into photography — yes, we will photograph you photographing things

  • A stack of your favorite books if reading is your thing

  • Your sewing machine, embroidery hoop, or knitting needles

  • A handwritten letter, poem, or song you’ve written

Your art doesn’t have to be “finished” to be worth photographing. The messy, in-progress version is actually cool.

The Outdoorsy One

If you’re a southwest Missouri kid who grew up hunting, fishing, hiking, or just being outside as much as humanly possible, own it. The Ozarks are literally your backyard and that’s a vibe that deserves to be in your photos.

Prop ideas:

  • Your hunting gear — camo, orange vest, bow or rifle (for outdoor sessions)

  • A fishing rod, tackle box, or your favorite lure

  • Your hiking boots, worn and muddy and perfect

  • A canoe paddle, kayak gear, or lake life accessories

  • Your dog — honestly one of the best props that exists

  • A campfire setup, lantern, or hammock for outdoor sessions

  • Your truck — yes, the truck counts as a prop and it works beautifully

Table Rock, Fellows Lake, the Pomme de Terre — we know the 417. If you want to take this session to a location that means something to you, let’s talk about it.

The Future-Focused One

Maybe you’ve known what you want to be since you were eight years old. Maybe you’re heading to a specific program, trade school, the military, or straight into your family’s business. Whatever’s next — it’s part of who you are RIGHT NOW. Let’s capture that.

Prop ideas:

  • Your college acceptance letter or school gear — hat, hoodie, pennant

  • Military branch gear if you’re enlisting — this one gets us every time

  • Scrubs, a stethoscope, or a white coat if you’re headed into healthcare

  • Your welding helmet, work gloves, or tool belt if you’re going into a trade

  • Chef’s knife and apron if culinary is your path

  • FFA jacket

The “I’m Just Really Into This Thing” One

Not everything needs a category. Some of the most incredible prop ideas come from you just being you in the most you-eat way possible.

This is my favorite category honestly.

Prop ideas for the unboxable senior:

  • Your vintage car, motorcycle, or the project vehicle you’ve been rebuilding

  • A collection you’ve built over years — vinyl, sneakers, hats, coins, whatever

  • Your gaming setup or favorite controller if gaming is genuinely your world

  • A chess board, card deck, or the board game you always win

  • Baking supplies, a rolling pin, your grandmother’s recipe card

  • Your favorite coffee mug and a book

  • A map of somewhere you’ve been or somewhere you’re going

  • Anything handmade by someone who loves you: a quilt, a letter, a carved something

The Golden Rule of Props:

Don’t bring something because it looks cool. Bring something because it’s yours.

The best props aren’t always the prettiest ones. They’re the ones with a story. The worn-out cleats. The journal with the broken spine. The guitar pick you’ve been using since eighth grade. The FFA jacket with all the patches your parents ironed on at midnight.

Be more you. Because only you can see the world the way you do — and I can’t wait to photograph it.
