Things to Do in Bolivar MO
Bolivar is 25 miles north of Springfield at the edge of the Ozarks, and it has more going on than people who have never been here expect. A 44-acre park with swans and a (very large) pond that might classify as a lake, a free world-class art gallery, 35 miles of rail trail, two golf courses, a historic downtown square, and two lakes nearby that people drive hours to reach. This is the local rundown.
Watching Bolivar Liberator Games and Meets
Bolivar High School fields teams in football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, cross country, tennis, golf, wrestling, and swimming. If you have not been to a Liberators game as a local, you are missing one of the more fun things the town does together.
Friday night football at Plaster Stadium on Pike Avenue has the kind of energy that only exists in small towns where everyone in the stands knows someone on the field. Basketball season runs through winter and the gym at BHS fills up fast for rivalry games. Track meets, baseball and softball games at Fullerton Fields, and tennis on the school courts all run through spring. Schedules are posted at bolivarschools.org.
Watching SBU Bearcats Games
Southwest Baptist University competes in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and fields teams in football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, track and field, cross country, and more.
Bearcat football games at Plaster Stadium have the bonus of being on an actual turf field with lights and stands, which makes for a solid evening out. The Jane and Ken Meyer Sports and Wellness Center hosts basketball and volleyball and seats around 2,800. Admission to SBU home events is generally affordable and schedules are at sbubearcats.com. For a college town in southwest Missouri, having a Division II program with a full slate of home games keeps things fun.
Dunnegan Memorial Park
Dunnegan Memorial Park at 601 N. Highway 83 is the centerpiece of Bolivar parks and recreation. It is 44 acres with a lake, a walking trail just over a mile, a cross-country runner path, multiple playgrounds including one designed for children with disabilities, pavilions, picnic tables, and barbecue grills. Swans, peacocks, ducks, and turtles make regular appearances depending on the season. The whole park is free and open to the public.
The park has QR codes posted throughout with history and nature information, and SBU students regularly set up hammocks along the trails during warmer months. In summer it fills up with families. Early morning it is one of the quieter spots in town. Either version is worth the trip.
The Frisco Highline Trail
The Frisco Highline Trail starts at the trailhead at 800 W. Jackson Street in Bolivar and runs 35 miles south to Springfield on a converted rail corridor. The trail is free, the Bolivar end is paved and shaded, and it crosses 16 historic railroad bridges in the Polk County section. It passes through La Petite Gemme Prairie, one of Missouri's most diverse native prairies, and winds through woodlands and open Ozarks terrain the whole way.
You do not have to do all 35 miles to make it worthwhile. The first few miles out of the Bolivar trailhead give you the art-covered bridge, the tree canopy, and the prairie section. The trailhead has parking and restrooms. Bikes and walkers both use it regularly. Fall is especially good on this trail.
The Bolivar Square and Downtown
The historic Bolivar Square has the 1907 Polk County Courthouse at its center, with the original Lady Justice statue still on top and a 4-H flower garden and Veterans Memorial on the lawn. Surrounding the square are locally owned shops, restaurants, antiques, and businesses. The First National Bank building nearby is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Downtown Bolivar is walkable and compact. A good way to spend a couple of hours is to park near the square and walk the surrounding blocks. The shops change but the bones of a genuine small-town Missouri downtown stay the same. Missouri Beef Days in May and Country Days in September both center on the square. For those specifically, the Bolivar events guide has the dates and details.
The Dunnegan Gallery of Art
The Ella Carothers Dunnegan Gallery of Art at 511 N. Pike Avenue is worth a stop. It is a 26,000-square-foot free art museum with more than 1,000 sculptures, paintings, and woodcrafts on display at any given time, focused on realism and depicting actual landscapes and historical figures. Many of the wood pieces are carved from a single piece of wood. It was founded in 1983 and is funded by a family trust. No admission, no catch.
For a town of 10,000, this is an unusually serious art collection. It is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and on weekends when there is an exhibition.
Golf in Bolivar
Bolivar has two golf courses. Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club on South Springfield Avenue is the private-club option on the south end of town. The Bolivar Municipal Golf Course is the public option: accessible, affordable, and a solid round for anyone looking for a casual afternoon on the course in the 417.
Shopping in Bolivar MO
Shopping in Bolivar MO is a mix of locally owned boutiques and small businesses around the square and along the main corridors, alongside the national retailers that have come in as the town has grown. For the more interesting shopping experience, the square and the blocks around it are where the locally owned stores are concentrated. The Greater Polk County Farmer's Market runs year-round and is a good spot for local goods.
For antiques and collectibles, Bolivar has a handful of shops worth walking through. The surrounding Polk County area has a strong agricultural identity and the antique stores reflect it: farm tools, household goods, regional collectibles that you are not going to find in a Springfield mall.
Food in Bolivar MO
Food in Bolivar MO covers the full range a town of this size typically does: fast food, local diners, Mexican, barbeque, Chinese, and a few spots that have been around long enough to become staples for Sunday lunch.
B&B Theatres Bolivar Cinema 5
For things to do in Bolivar MO tonight, B&B Theatres Bolivar Cinema 5 is the local movie theatre. It runs current releases and is one of the cleaner, more reliably operating small-town cinemas in southwest Missouri. Good option for a weeknight out without driving to Springfield.
The Bolivar Recreation and Aquatic Center
The Bolivar Recreation and Aquatic Center on West Broadway has a seasonal indoor aquatic center with a pool, waterslide, and splash pad, along with a gym, weight room, and cardio equipment year-round. It is a city-run facility with memberships and day passes available. The aquatic side runs seasonally, so check the schedule before planning a summer visit.
Seasonal Activities Around Bolivar
Hummingbird Berry Farm a few miles south of Bolivar runs a u-pick operation for blackberries and raspberries in summer. Fieth Family Farm north of town has a corn maze and pumpkin patch running in fall through Halloween. Both are the kind of low-key local-farm activity that the 417 does well and that larger cities around here have mostly lost.
Camping Near Bolivar MO
Camping near Bolivar MO means Pomme de Terre State Park, about 30 minutes north. The park sits on 7,800-acre Pomme de Terre Lake with around 240 campsites, yurts, camper cabins, a full-service marina cabin, and a lake house for lodging options. The lake has two public swimming beaches, two hiking trails, boat ramps, and a marina. It is the only lake in Missouri that offers true muskellunge fishing, which draws a specific crowd. The campgrounds operate year-round at Pittsburg and March through November at Hermitage. Reservations are recommended for peak summer weekends.
Stockton Lake is another option further out, also a solid choice for fishing, boating, and camping if you want to explore more of the 417.
What Happens in Bolivar: The Events Side
Bolivar runs a genuine annual events calendar. Missouri Beef Days in May is a week-long celebration with a rodeo, parade, concert, cook-off, and ag expo that draws people from across the region. Country Days on the Square in September, the Polk County Fair, and the Celebration of Freedom fireworks display at SBU in July all anchor the local calendar. Those are covered in the Bolivar events and festivals guide with current dates and details.
