Yes, you should absolutely bring your dog to your senior session

If you’ve been on the fence about bringing your dog to your senior session, consider this your sign. Bring the dog.

We mean it. Some of our favorite senior photos ever taken have a dog in them — and not in a “here’s a prop dog” way. In a “this animal has been part of every important thing in this person’s life” way. Dogs add so much more to your expressions and your joy during the session.

Your Dog Is Part of Your Story

Think about it. Your dog has been there for all of it — the early mornings, the hard days, the lazy summers, the homework sessions that went too late. They know you in a way that’s actually kind of profound if you think about it. If that relationship is part of who you are, it belongs in your senior photos. Full stop.

Dogs Make You Relax

Here’s a thing we’ve noticed: when someone’s dog is in the session, the person holding the leash immediately relaxes. They stop thinking about where to put their hands. They stop wondering what their face is doing. They’re just with their dog — and that ease, that comfort, that genuine joy? It photographs well. Your dog might accidentally make you look better.

It’s also good to know that dogs are wonderful cutie models but they sometimes do make it more challenging so if you already know that your dog is going to stress you out then this is not for you. Just grab a pup cup on the way home from your session and snuggle your dog when you get home!

Logistics

Bring a friend or family member who can wrangle the dog between shots so you’re not managing them the whole time. Make sure your dog has had a good walk beforehand so they’re a little calmer on set. Bring their favorite treats for cooperation (snacks help everyone, as we’ve previously established). And accept that there will be some chaotic frames — a nose in the wrong place, a tail blur, a look that was definitely not the look. Those frames are also kind of perfect.

Indoor vs. Outdoor With Your Dog

Both work great. Dogs in the studio can be really striking — clean backdrop, your dog sitting next to you, the whole thing feeling deliberate and composed. Dogs outside in the 417 aretheir own magic — fields, open water, that golden Missouri light — it’s the kind of photo that looks like it belongs on a wall. Talk to us about your dog’s personality and energy and we’ll figure out which environment suits them best.

The Scoop

Senior photos are about capturing who you are at this specific moment in your life. If your dog is part of who you are — and for a lot of people they really, genuinely are — then they should be in the photos. Don’t overthink it.

Bring your precious dog.
