What nobody tells you about senior photoshoot day
Senior photo day has a whole thing around it. You’ve seen the results: the gorgeous galleries, the perfect light, the photos that make everyone go quiet for a second when they see them. What you don’t always see is everything that happened between showing up and getting those photos.
Here’s the real version. The fun version. The one we think you should actually know going in.
You’re Going to Be Nervous and That’s Completely Normal
Almost everyone walks through the door with some version of “I don’t know how to do this” energy. First-time jitters are real and they show up in the first few frames of almost every session we’ve ever shot. Here’s what’s also true: they go away fast. Usually within the first ten minutes, something happens — a joke lands, a pose feels natural, we find your light — and you forget to be nervous. The nervousness is just the opening act. Stick with it.
The Best Photos Happen When You’re Not Thinking About the Camera
We’ll be doing something — adjusting the light, telling a story, asking you a question — and you’ll be responding to that, and that’s when we get the shot. The photos where you’re thinking “okay I am being photographed right now” are great and beautiful. The photos where you forgot for a second? Those are the ones you’ll frame. We know how to get you there. Just trust the process and let yourself be in the room.
Outfit Changes Are an Adventure
Nobody changes outfits gracefully on session day. There’s always a zipper that’s being dramatic, a hair situation that needs a reset, shoes that were great in theory and are slightly less great in practice. This is normal and it’s part of the day. Build a little buffer time, bring what you need to do a quick refresh, and don’t stress when it feels a little chaotic. Chaotic is fine. We’ve seen chaotic. Chaotic still produces beautiful photos.
Something Will Be Imperfect and That’s Okay
A cloud will cover the sun right when the light was perfect. Your hair will do something unexpected. A car will drive through the background of a shot at the exact wrong moment.These things happen on every single session and they don’t ruin anything — they’re just part of shooting in the real world. We adapt, we laugh about it, we keep going. Some of the most interesting photos we’ve ever taken happened right after something went sideways.
You’re Going to Feel Something When You See the Photos
We’re giving you fair warning because it catches people off guard sometimes. There’s a moment where we show you our camera screen and you see yourself and something shifts. It’s not always tears (though sometimes it is, and that’s great). It’s more like recognition. Like, oh. That’s me. That’s actually me.
Senior year is a big deal. This chapter of your life is worth documenting. When you see photos that actually capture who you are at this moment — you feel that. And it’s a really good feeling.
