Jake & Maddy Valentine Mini
Makenzie here! As a little sister, there is no greater joy than watching your siblings find their person to spend life with. Growing up with Jake as a best friend, I knew whoever his future wife is would be so lucky.
Maddy is such a joy to be around and brought so much love and life to our family. Truly sunshine in human form. I can't wait to watch them get married this summer and welcome her as a sister!
Bringing out their personality and love for each other in this session was SO easy, because just look at them!! Such an honor to capture a love as sweet as this one.
There's a particular kind of nerves that come with photographing someone you love. You want to get it right in a way that goes beyond just technically correct exposures and well-composed frames. You want the photos to actually feel like them — like the versions of them you know when the camera isn't there. That pressure could make a session harder. With Jake and Maddy it made it better, because I already knew exactly what I was looking for.
I knew how Jake laughs. I knew what Maddy brings out in him that nobody else does. I knew the way they look at each other during a quiet moment. My job in this session wasn't to discover any of that — it was just to be ready when it showed up. And it showed up constantly.
The photos that came out of this session are some of my favorites I've ever taken. Not because they're technically the most complex or the most elaborate setup. Because they're real. Every single frame looks exactly like the two of them, and that's everything.
Engagement sessions and couples photos before a wedding are worth doing for a lot of reasons. They give you images to use for save the dates, wedding websites, and announcements. They get you comfortable in front of a camera before the big day when the stakes feel higher. And they capture this specific season of your relationship — the engaged version of you, before everything changes in the most beautiful way.
For Jake and Maddy specifically, these photos will always represent the months leading up to one of the biggest days of their lives. That's worth having documented by someone who was already rooting for them before the session even started.
So glad you let me be the one to do this, Jake. Maddy, welcome to the family — officially this summer, but really already.
— Makenzie
